Whales Unchained Maui 2013

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Ahhhh now that’s more like the Maui weather we wanted! Before we could kick back on the beach and bask in the sun, which have no doubt we did,

we were off to Maui Adventures in Lahaina for an early morning (the girls were up at 6 AM) of chasing the humpbacks via large Zodiac. With Captain Becca and First Mate Gabe, we loaded up on the boat and headed out for a two hour cruise between Maui and Lanai.

Well it appears that Sarah has bonafide “whale whisperer” skillz. Not only did we see our first whale within minutes of leaving the dock, but we ran into something crazy. Call it “fight club for whales” or in an homage to Mr. Tarantino, “Whales Unchained”. A very large group of male humpbacks, Capt. Becca estimated there could have been as many as 30!, were pursuing a lone female and jousting for the right to, as Sarah so delicately put it, “get in her pants”. We followed them around for about an hour as they chased and fought up and down the coast. A brief snippet of video shot in the handheld style of Tarantino action….

After that chase scene we headed back for breakfast and beach. Where the whale show continued. Bonnie and Sarah were catching the rays and keeping watch with the binoculars when they spotted a mother whale with her calf doing basic training. Tail slaps, fin flaps and full body breaching. This show went on for hours about 200 yards from the beach. Bonnie now wants to rent a kayak, so she can go out and “stay far enough away, but be right on top of them”. But anyway here is a blurry shot of Mama whale, I’ll call her Mama Cass, breaching.

After a full day of whale heaven we headed up for a celebration on Sarah’s last night of island time. LUAU!

We got the leis and libations going. Two Lava Flows to go with the Luau pork

Tiki torch lit, let’s bring on the dancers!
