Bonnie & Joel's Excellent Adventures

Wild wild Ukee (Ucluelet)

After our adventures in Victoria we loaded up the truck – Prius – and headed upcountry to Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island. A three night stay at A Snug Harbor…there web site is www.awesomeview.com. Here’s the reason..

On our agenda here was hiking…we started in a drizzle on the Lighthouse trail…there was a lunch break at the Fish and Chips food truck that filled us up so much we canceled dinner plans…a drive to the Torino Botanical Garden and drinks at the Wickaninsh Inn then back to A Sung Harbor to rest up.

The next morning we were out early for a 7 a.m. boat ride to hunt for bears…they forage along the shoreline at low tide finding bear sushi under the rocks. Mission accomplished. Two bears, half a dozen bald eagles including a juvenile looking for bear scraps, deer, raccoons and sea lions.

After the three hour tour, we started looking for coffee and breakfast. One problem, while we were out on the boat, a road construction crew cut the ONE power feed for the area. We discovered that every spot in Ukee was closed, we finally saw a sign on a door that said no power. We decided to drive to Tofino to see if they had power. The first spot we came to was open, we thought that Tofino may have been spared the outage, but it turned out that this restaurant had its own backup generator. Evidently the power interruptions are a common occurrence out here in the wild and these guys were tired of losing business.

Once refueled we headed out to hike the rainforest, upon reaching the parking area we discovered we had an urgent need for a nap….we actually took a power nap in the car, then took the hike…

Enough activity for one day in the Ukee, we had dinner at Hank’s in town as the power was restored at 4 pm.

Our stay came to an end after a wonderful breakfast of local smoked salmon and eggs with two couples from Toronto and one from Edmonton. We pointed the Prius back towards the scenic route towards Qualicum Beach. Stopping for a photo opportunity at Kennedy Lake and a quick hike at Lower Qualicum Falls.
